The Woodland Glade
In this project rainwater that sheets across a large area of oak and hickory forest in the front of the house is conveyed along the driveway and along the edge of the back lawn. A crease between the lawn and the goshen stone edging is enough to create a reflective ribbon of water during rain. This water then passes through a series of stone basins as it descends the back hillside. The enormous glacial boulders all came from the house foundation and have been used to articulate the entryway, walkways, steps and drainage ways.
The plantings of birch, serviceberry, swamp azalea, summersweet and fothergilla create a woodland mid-canopy and under story. The raised bank at the edge of the back lawn forms a colorful edge of meadow perennials.
